About US Property Tax Data
US Property Tax Data is an independent, data-driven resource that provides free property tax information for every U.S. state and county. Our goal is simple: help homeowners, buyers, and researchers understand how much property tax they will actually pay — before they commit to a purchase.
What We Cover
We publish county-level and state-level property tax metrics for all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, covering more than 3,100 counties:
- Effective Property Tax Rate — median tax ÷ median home value × 100
- Median Annual Property Tax — the midpoint of real estate taxes paid
- Median Home Value — for context on assessed value base
- State and County Rankings — highest and lowest tax rate jurisdictions
- Property Tax Calculator — estimate your annual and monthly bill
- Homestead Exemption Information — where available
Data Sources
All data on US Property Tax Data comes from official, publicly available government sources. We do not generate or estimate tax rates ourselves. Each dataset is used under its original license terms.

U.S. Census Bureau — American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year Estimates
The ACS is the largest household survey in the United States, conducted continuously by the U.S. Census Bureau. We use the 5-Year Estimates for county-level property tax and home value data. Learn more at census.gov. -
Median Real Estate Taxes Paid (ACS Variable B25103)
Reports the median annual real estate taxes paid by owner-occupied housing units with a mortgage or similar debt, for a given county. This is a self-reported figure from the ACS survey. -
Median Home Value (ACS Variable B25077)
Reports the median value of owner-occupied housing units. Used here as the denominator for computing the effective property tax rate.
Our Methodology
Effective property tax rate is calculated as:
Effective Rate = (Median Real Estate Taxes Paid ÷ Median Home Value) × 100
This metric normalizes for the wide variation in housing prices across jurisdictions and is the most accurate way to compare property tax burden across counties. Unlike nominal millage rates, which depend on assessment ratios that vary by state and can be misleading, the effective rate reflects what homeowners actually pay.
Where county-level data is unavailable (typically for very small counties with limited sample size), we indicate this explicitly rather than substituting estimates.
Editorial Standards
Some pages include an "Property Tax Insight" section that summarizes key patterns in the underlying data. These insights are generated using AI language models based on the actual data points, and are reviewed for accuracy. They are analytical commentary for informational purposes, not tax or legal advice.
